When the song ended, Elizabeth sang another. When she finished singing, they traveled in companionable silence. It was good having her home again.
After several minutes, he asked, “Now that you’ve seen the sheriff, do you feel better?”
Elizabeth nodded. “It’s a load off my mind. After I help the police artist with the sketch of the suspect tomorrow, I can wash my hands of this whole mess. It won’t be my responsibility anymore. I can relax and let the professionals handle things.”
“It was never your responsibility.”
She sighed heavily. “I know, Thomas. You want me to believe it’s not my fault that a lunatic is trying to kill me and everyone close to me. I get it.” She smiled at him. “But it sure feels like it’s my fault. He did follow me here.”
“Ja. And the snow is following me home. Is the snow my fault?”
Elizabeth laughed. “Point made, Thomas.”
The snow grew heavier and visibility became difficult as dusk settled into darkness.
“I can see the highway up ahead. A few miles on it and we will be able to pull onto less traveled roads.” Thomas wondered if he was reassuring her or himself.
Elizabeth remained burrowed beneath the blanket and quiet. He knew she was concerned about the fierceness of the storm, as well.
The sudden roar of an approaching car engine filled the air.
Both Thomas and Elizabeth looked ahead and then behind the buggy to locate the vehicle.
“Who would be crazy enough to drive his car at such a high speed in this weather?” The words tumbled from his mouth seconds before headlights of an approaching vehicle appeared on the dark country road at the top of the upcoming hill.
The mare, skittish already from the punishing storm, snorted and raised her head. The buggy swayed slightly from left to right, then back again.
“Whoa, girl. It’s allrecht. Take it easy.” Thomas tried to keep his voice calm and authoritative with the animal. The last thing he needed was his mare to break out of a trot and run freely toward the open highway. He pulled back slightly on the reins, trying to keep her in check.
The approaching car put on its bright lights and gunned the motor, picking up speed. Its tires spun a shower of snow into the air as it crested the hill. The vehicle, taking the bend in the road too quickly, slipped and slid in the freshly fallen snow.
“Thomas, be careful.” Thomas could feel Elizabeth’s tension as she moved closer to him, straightened her back, inhaled sharply and placed a hand on his knee. “Maybe we should pull over and let this idiot pass by.”
Thomas didn’t disagree, but where was there a safe place to pull over? Snowdrifts were already forming on the sides of the road and he couldn’t risk the buggy getting stuck.
The car’s headlights blinded them as the driver lost control and careened from his lane into theirs. The driver hit the brakes but not in time. The roaring approach of the car terrified their horse.
